Ben Jacks on Instagram: “TBT to shooting my homie @karliekloss for @glamourmag – was a rad day with smiles all around.”

Supermodel. International jetsetter. YouTube sensation. Cookie purveyor. Coder. Karlie Kloss has made a career out of shattering traditional notions of modeling (ie: voiceless clothes hangers)—and with her latest initiative, she’s looking to do the same for coders. Think you have to be male to write an app? It’s no secret that there are far more men in tech (even though studies have shown that women are actually better coders), and it’s a statistic that isn’t lost on Kloss. Her new Kode With Klossy summer camp will be an immersive two-week program exclusively for girls. Beyond that, Kode With Klossy will provide nearly 80 scholarships for the day camps, which will be based in New York, Los Angeles, and Karlie’s hometown of Saint Louis. Applications close April 30, and recipients will be notified by May 20. For more information, click the link here:

And, as the camp’s name implies, you very well may be coding with Ms. Kloss herself. The model still considers herself a student, and plans to visit the camps as much as she can. Save us a seat, Karlie!

GLAMOUR: You’re a supermodel and all around glamour girl. We’re no experts, but we’d venture to guess that’s not the typical background of a coder. What inspired you to get into coding?

KARLIE KLOSS: I always loved math and science growing up and before my modeling career really took off, I wanted to be a doctor. In my time working in fashion, I’ve seen the way technology intersects with the industry and was curious to learn how the back-end really works.

G:

The stats don’t lie: There are far fewer women than men in tech, and specifically far fewer who can code. How do you hope to change that, both through being a face for coding and through your scholarship?

KK: My hope is that Kode With Klossy not only creates more opportunities for girls to learn code but that we help change the way young women think about computer science. It’s frustrating to read the stats, especially when you are in classes with incredibly bright young women watching as they challenge themselves and get excited about coding. With Kode With Klossy, we set out to create a fun and engaging learning environment that includes awesome role models and teachers for our students.

G: What other stereotypes do you hope to shatter about coders?

KK: Coding is a life skill. It’s not just for programmers. It’s a tool that can be applied to any passion or industry. One of my goals is to draw attention to the fact that there are amazing opportunities across all sectors.

G: On a scale of 1-10, what level coder are you?

KK: I am very much a student. I’m still learning, though I could make something that resembles an app 🙂

G: Will you be traveling to all the camps? What will your role be?

KK: My goal is to be at each of the camps this summer. My favorite part is learning with the girls and seeing their excitement when they realize what they’ve created by the end of the program. These girls are change makers and their creativity is incredibly inspiring.

G: What will a typical day at the camp be like?

KK: Kode With Klossy is a day camp. The curriculum is powered by Learn.co and is taught by really wonderful teachers. Students will learn the fundamentals of Ruby on Rails, and by the end of the camp, build their own functional web-app. The goal is for the camp to be fun and collaborative experience with delicious snacks 😉

G: We would attend for Karlie’s Kookies alone! You’re a student yourself, having enrolled at NYU this past September. What’s Karlie Kloss’s school style like?

KK: I have to admit that my school style has not changed that much since high school. I still wear jeans, a t-shirt and a backpack.

G: Lastly, if we come to the camp this summer, will you teach us how to code?

KK: Our amazing Kode With Klossy teachers will take the lead, but I’ll be sure to give a few helpful tips I’ve learned along the way!

Wait, Karlie Kloss Gets Paid How Much Per Step?

Ever wonder how much models are paid for their work during Fashion Week?

Well, the Association of Accounting Technicians were just as curious and put their math prowess to work. They crunched the numbers and found out that supermodel Karlie Kloss makes approximately $299 for every long-legged stride she takes! Go Karlie!

Kloss in the Diane von Furstenberg spring ‘16 show

Heres how they did it: Under AAT figured out that a model takes an average of 30 steps per runway and divided that by their paycheck. It’s fascinating way of looking at it, don’t you think?

Other interesting findings? An 18-year-old American model who reportedly made $2,637 total for the 40-plus shows she walked in (which included massive names like Alexander McQueen and Chanel couture); while Lexi Boling, has walked in over 100 shows this year, and is estimated to have earned around $25,000 for her runway work.

The biggest payday for a model comes when she signs a contract with a cosmetic company or fashion house, explaining why top-earners like Gisele and Kate Moss don’t pop up on the runway much. Kloss, for instance, is thought to be worth around $3.8 million, making her one of today’s top supers. Who could’ve predicted such a bright future for the innocent-faced newbie who made her runway debut for Calvin Klein at the tender age of 15?
